Two crises. One waste stream.

Kenyan farms and processors pay for energy they cannot control, and pay again to remove organic waste they cannot use. Diesel hit an all-time record in May 2026 — and Kenya imports 100% of its refined fuel. Every global oil shock arrives at the farm gate within one pricing cycle.

Meanwhile, the same site is paying tipping fees and transport costs to truck away tea leaves, food waste, and processing effluent — organic material that still holds most of its chemical energy. The energy and the cost are the same molecule, going in opposite directions.

Every VPU runs the same four-stage process — whether the input is shredded farm waste or liquid tea factory effluent piped straight from the floor drain.

01 / INTAKE

Waste enters

Solid organic waste is shredded to 20mm. Liquid effluent — like tea factory slurry — is piped directly in. No pre-treatment needed for liquids.

02 / DIGEST & SELF-POWER

Bacteria take over

Anaerobic digestion converts organic carbon to biogas over 15–25 days at 35°C. The biogas fuels an internal generator that powers the whole system.

03 / HARVEST ELECTRONS

Direct electricity

Digestate passes through a microbial fuel cell stack. Bacteria transfer electrons directly to carbon electrodes, charging a vanadium redox flow battery.

04 / SEPARATE & FINISH

Fertilizer and water

Remaining solids are dewatered, dried, granulated, and bagged at 25kg with QR tracing. Liquids pass through a reed bed and UV unit to NEMA Class 1.

Every input exits as a product.

Nothing leaves the system as waste. Four commercial outputs, generated continuously, from a single feedstock.

Electricity

Grid-tie ready, stored in a vanadium redox flow battery with a 20-year lifetime and zero capacity degradation.

Biogas

Piped on-site, no storage

Surplus biogas replaces heavy fuel oil and LPG directly in existing boilers — usable in retrofits without a new burner.

Fertilizer

25kg bags, QR-traced

Certified organic, NPK-verified fertilizer, granulated and packaged per batch with full traceability.

Clean water

NEMA Class 1

Reed bed filtration and UV sterilisation return irrigation-ready water — closing the loop back to the farm.

Every model uses the same process — only the container count and throughput change. A VPU-2 upgrades to a VPU-3 by adding one container, with no downtime.
